Early 2017 brought several surprises:
“These Boots of Ours” was shortlisted for The Bath Flash Award; “The Way We Weren’t” is on the long list over at Reflex Fiction; “The Memory of Elephants” and “Better This Way” scored in the top ten in Molotov Cocktail’s recent Flash Rage contest. Several other acceptances (both print and online, flash and short story) have put me solidly over the halfway mark to one hundred credits. I also have a non-fiction piece about the linguistics in Arrival on Dan Koboldt’s Science in Sci-Fi blog. Let’s say 2017, with all of its ups and downs, has been kind to me.
Update: 21 April 2017
The holidays slowed me down, but not for long–my fingers started twitching again as soon as the new year rang in, and sending ALL the submissions resulted in a happy 20 April (four pieces accepted!). Very pleased to still be reading for Syntax & Salt, still delighting in a wonderful symbiotic relationship with the members of FlashForce5 (or 6 or 4), and still coming up with story idea after story idea. In a few months, I’ve lost a dog, bummed around Naples scoping out Danny Jones’ childhood haunts, and visited my dear grandmother in hospice. An emotional time, but emotions are the lifeblood of a writer, aren’t they? As for my writing career news, it’s this: I am now represented by the amazing Laura Bradford of Bradford Literary Agency. A good move, I think.
